The Nigerian maritime sector is poised for greater development, as the current Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA Dr Bashir Jamoh is repositioning the agency to deliver on its mandates.
Dr Jamoh, who is an expert in maritime issues and well-respected technocrat has simplified his strategies on 3-Point Agenda, to include maritime safety, security and shipping development, which he said are important for global trade.
Addressing maritime Journalists on his 100 Days in office, Dr Jamoh stressed the important of safety in maritime trade.
He said, “The NIMASA ACT 2007, empowers the Agency to ensure safety of ship and those onboard
The NIMASA DG added, “Shipping is responsible for more than 80 percent of international transportation of goods that sustains the global supply chain, which is a significant component of the global economy.
Infact, without shipping, import and export activities will be difficult”.
Responding to questions on issues of piracy at sea, he explained,
“Security of the Maritime domain is importantl for global trade. It is also one of the core mandates of NIMASA.
The Agency is working in collaboration with Nigerian Navy to tackle piracy at sea”
That was not all.
Dr Jamoh further disclosed that NIMASA is working at ensuring that local ship owners in the country benefit from government incentives, like operators in Aviation and manufacturing sectors of the economy.
According to him, shipping development will enhance fleet expansion, ship building, and repairs to create jobs for the citizens, especially the youths.
On anti-piracy war, he revealed that arrest of 27 pirates has been made in the last three months.
17 are in the custody of Nigerian Police while 10 were arrested by the Navy in collaboration with the Agency.
NIMASA anti-piracy war has earned Nigeria international recognition, as IMO, a specialised Agency of United Nations responsible for regulating shipping, commended NIMASA’s efforts in tackling piracy in its waters.
Recall that since 2016, not until last two months, there was no single arrest of pirates on Nigerian territorial waters.
Aside from maritime security, the Agency is doing a lot on capability building. For instance,
156 personnel of Navy, Police and other security agencies have been trained within Dr Jamoh’s 100 days in office, to fight piracy on waterways.
