The Customs Area Controller (CAC), Federal Operations Unit, FOU Zone ‘C’ Owerri, Comptroller Olusemire Kayode, has made outstanding performance in anti-smuggling activities within his area of coverage, as the Unit intercepted 1,182 cartons of Analgin injections, 1,920 bags of foreign rice and two 40ft containers loaded with 612 Chairs smuggled into the country.
Comptroller Kayode disclosed this in a press conference, explained further that the deadly drugs were concealed in a container and brought into the country illegally.
He also displayed a 40ft container with 521 bales of secondhand clothings, another truck with 61 bales of secondhand clothings, making a total of 582 bales, as well as other banned items with a Duty Paid Value of over N492 million, recorded in the month of November, 2019.
The Unit arrested six suspected smugglers in connection with the seized items.
Speaking further, the CAC condemned in totality smuggling of 1,182 cartons of Analgin injections into the country despite the health implication.
He stressed, “This particular drug has been banned by NAFDAC since 2005 because of its severe adverse effects on people. What will make someone to bring in such dangerous drug that is detrimental to health?
“In fact, this type of drug is even worse than Tramadol. This is because with Tramadol, there is an approved dosage but Analgin has been banned globally due to the grave adverse effects on people”.
He informed, “The container carrying the drugs was intercepted at Akpajo, along Port Harcourt, Owerri road, and the drugs were found concealed with durable items”.
Comptroller Kayode added, “That was not all. We also discovered that some bags of the rice we seized had already expired and not suitable for consumption.
“This shows that the fight against rice smuggling is not yet over. Some Nigerians are so desperate and always in the habit of breaking the law. These unpatriotic Nigerians struggle daily to smuggle rice into the country against government’s policy and we are ready to deter them.
“From the records so far, it is clear that the border drill exercise, the activities of Customs Strike Force and Federal operations units are yielding positive results.”
