It was a moment of recognition for hard work, commitment and dedication to statutory duties, as the Customs Area Controller (CAC) of Apapa Command, Comptroller Abubakar Bashir, was honoured with the World Customs Organisation (WCO) Award for remarkable performance in 2018 fiscal year.
The Award presented to him, at the International Customs Day, in Abuja, by the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Ali Hameed, came in the nick of time, as the Command worked assiduously in areas of revenue generation, anti-smuggling and trade facilitation in line with global best practice.
The WCO Award is most befitting for Comptroller Bashir and his Command, looking at their outstanding seizures of aircraft and 41 containers of Tramadol, with Duty Paid Value (DPV) of over N7.3billion for the Tramadol alone.
Comptroller Bashir and his men made the Service proud, as they rejected a huge sum of N150million offered to them as bribe by the importer of the seized Tramadol.
Their sincerity in rejecting such bribe, at a time where many people see kick-back as a fastest way of self enrichment will remain in history for up-coming Customs officers to learn from.
